Amazon.com Take one part Ramones, one part Buzzcocks, and one part Husker Du, and you've got the basic foundation of Green Day, a punky, witty, melodic San Francisco Bay area trio who became overnight stars in 1994 when this album, their third overall release and major label debut, catapulted them to the top of the pop charts. Led by guitarist/vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong and their secret weapon, powerhouse drummer Tre Cool, Green Day put '70s and '80s punk in a compact '90s package with songs like "Longview," "Basket Case," "Pulling Teeth," and the hit semi-ballad, "When I Come Around." One the few modern alternative rock bands with a bona fide sense of humor. --Billy Altman

Best Album of the 90's, Period... March 10, 2010 Jeremy J. Baker (Omaha, Ne. USA) I saw the video for "Basket Case" on MTV in 1994, when I was 17, and I was instantly hooked. I went out and bought the CD and ended up loving every song on the CD. This is one of the very few albums I have listened to(and I have listened to a lot) where every song is good or great. Many other albums have one to a few good songs. This album you can play straight through and love it all. I listened to the CD several times, everyday, for at least a year. My favorite songs are "Sassafras Roots", "Longview", "Basket Case", "Welcome to Paradise", and "When I Come Around". I probably purchased at least 5 copies, since I scratched the hell out of them, playing them so much.
The songs all have kind of the same sound, with the same few chords played over and over, in different patterns. Fast and furious drum beats accompany the simple, yet addictive, guitar riffs. A lot of Green Day haters criticized this chaotic "noise", but that's punk for you. There's something about the sound that is addictive, like a drug. Most of it is upbeat and energetic, while still appealing to rebellious teenagers with the lyrics. It makes you feel somewhat "euphoric", at least it made me feel that way, back in the day and still does. The effect is similar to listen to early, upbeat Beatles' songs.
I was disappointed with Green Day's albums after "Dookie", until "American Idiot" was released, approximately a decade later. I had not listened to Green Day in years, but loved the new, different, sound of Green Day. It started a Green Day renaissance and I had to listen to "Dookie" again and I re-discovered how great the album is. I don't like it as much as when I was a teenager, but it passes the test of time and I still enjoy listening to it.
Any teenager out there should check out this album. Many adults may enjoy it too. I miss the days when I blasted this album through my car's speakers, repeatedly. Check out these other Green Day Albums: Kerplunk, American Idiot and 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours too.
The Creation of Pop Punk As Asual February 9, 2010 Joshua Disney (Fort Collins) There is an elitist side of me that is almost unwilling to give this album a higher review than three stars. So, does that mean that an immature nostalgia is the reason for the 5 glittering ones? Nay, friends. I have recently started listening to this album again, and I now believe it is among the best crafted albums in rock music.
All the music is simplistic, but arranged in a perfectly bubblegum pop accessible to the ears. Yes I would prefer Bad Brains or The Stooges any day of the week, but they would never work on MTV.
Green Day in the mid-'90s was a pop concession I am willing to make because it wasn't trite yet. Soon, all these clones came along (talkin' to you, Good Charlotte) and drove the formula into the ground. Don't blame the formula, blame the faux-hawks.
I recently reviewed "The Slim Shady LP" by Eminem, and in ways this is a similar album. Immature, juvenile, but in a way that brings the listener back to those crappy high-school years, with their anxieties, drugs, etc.
If you have a radio, you know these songs, and there's a reason for that. No, it's not really punk, but that didn't matter until they released freakin' "American Idiot." Save your Green Day criticisms for a more deserving album.
A Green Day Classic! November 30, 2009 Lapislolita (Lynchburg,VA USA) This 1994 release from the original pop-punkers Green Day still sounds as great today as it did then, although a bit nostaglic (in a good way, of course).
It harkens back to the days of cutting class and smoking pot with a mohawk and torn-up cargo pants. Songs like "Burn-out" and "Welcome to Paradise" were the theme songs of Gen X. The top-ten hit "When I come around" was definitely a break-thru song for them and it's one of my personal favorites, along with "Basketcase" and "She".
The whole album is just like taking a teenager growing up in the 90's, sticking it in a garage, and giving it a mic and electric guitar. :)
Recommended to all!
HELL YEAH! November 14, 2009 Richard Scott (MUNCIE, IN) BACK WHEN DISCO WAS ON THE RIZE AND HAIR BANDS WERE THE NORM, MY ONLY ALTERNATIVE WAS THE SEX PISTOLS, RAMONE'S ETC. PUNK WAS A SLAP THAT ROCK NEEDED DESPERATELY. IN 1994, I PICKED UP GREEN DAY'S "DOOKIE." I WAS VERY IMPRESSED, BUT TO BE HONEST, DID NOT THINK THEY WOULD MAKE IT WITH THEIR PUNK ROOTS. NEVERTHELESS, THEY PROVED ME WRONG. I MUST SAY, MY FAVORITE IS "BASKET CASE." THE DRUMMING BRINGS BACK MEMMORIES OF KEITH MOON IN HIS HEYDAY. WHEN MY DAUGHTER LEAVES FOR SCHOOL, I SNEEK OUT HER GREEN DAY. TOO OLD? WHO CARES!

WOW!!
I love all the other 1 star reviews! To those who posted them,I refer you to my review of "Insomniac" It sums up my take on the band as a whole since all Green Day albums are pretty much the same!
